The Teachers of the NEA actually think they work for the Union ...... the Citizens are just like spectators at a baseball game.
The necessary Paradigm change is for their realization that they work for the Citizens.

Oh my God did Rahm Emanuel actually get elected mayor of Chicago?
How can so many people be so stupid?
That city is doomed.

I would never join a union. I would not want to be stuck at the same level as a lot of screw-off union members. I want an opportunity to work harder and excel and live the American dream.
Union shops are full of animosity created mostly be the union stewards and union bigwigs (CEOs?) I have known friends who were happily employed until they joined the union and became malcontents.
Not all unions are bad but the really big ones almost entirely are so.
I watched the machinations and outright dishonesty pervade the URW in Akron and saw every single tire company in Akron (formerly the rubber capital of the world) leave the city because of crushing attacks by the URW. Today there is not one single tire manufactured in Akron.

Pack I'd say your opinion of joining a Union would change quickly if the job you were at was considering laying you off or firing you because of your payscale or because they're going with a younger workforce. They won't tell you this outright, but when the pink slip comes, you'll know why. You worked hard, were on time, did what the boss told you and beyond, yet there you stand..without a job. A fool believes he's irreplaceable; that his hard work will pave his way to the top. Maybe at one time that was true- not today. You are replaceable. They'll go to India if they have to to get it done and pay peanuts for it.

The difference is you trust a company to do the right thing and some may still play by the rules. I don't trust them. You're a mere cog in the machine. You go down, you're replacement will be in place before you're stiff. The only thing that gives workers any fighting chance nowadays are Unions. Otherwise, it's you vs the rich and corporations and you won't win that fight. It'll be starting over at 50, or 60.

A company has every right to let any one go at anytime. Just as we as workers have the right to quit at anytime. Why is this wrong?
I am not going to give money to a union just so they can give it to Democrats. I prefer to stand on my own. I have done just fine. Every single person where I work has taken a 5% pay cut. I don't like it but you don't hear me bitching about it. If I could make more elsewhere I would be gone.
If they try and take to much away then I can easily find work elsewhere for the same or more and I would leave. No one owes me a job. If I get let go and can't find work making what I want somewhere else I would simply start my own business.

It's nice knowing where you'll be working tommorrow. It's also nice knowing a boss can't toss me out on a whim or personal vendetta. It's also nice to have some job security. I could go on. We've got guys from all walks; some with degrees, some not, some from management elsewhere (I work with a former middle manager ), former EMT, business owners, you name it. They came for the pay, for job security and benefits-for the American dream. If that's wrong, we might as well call it a day and all go work at McDonald's. ...
